The Shakyamuni Buddha, also known as the Gautama Buddha, was a originally a prince from Nepal of the name Siddhartha Gautama. He is believed by Buddhists to be an enlightened teacher who attained full Buddhahood and shared his insights to help sentient beings end rebirth and suffering. Accounts of his life, discourses and monastic rules are believed by Buddhists to have been summarised after his death and memorized by his followers. Various collections of teachings attributed to him were passed down by oral tradition and first committed to writing about 400 years later.
Here, Shakyamuni Buddha is portrayed in the “Earth Touching Pose” with his right arm resting on the right thigh with the fingers pointing downwards, and his left hand resting upwards, the pose that Shakyamuni Buddha used right before his enlightenment where a demon tried to trick him into moving. The Buddha’s eyes are almost closed in meditation. He is sitting on a rock with key excerpts of the Heart Sutra.
This statue is a suitable gift for Buddhists or to people who enjoy meditation or yoga. Placing a Buddha statue at home reminds us of kindness and tolerance, to treat people all living things around us well, and to pray for peace and happiness. If there is a Bodhisattva and a Buddha statue in the same space, it is recommended to place the statue of the Buddha in the center, and the Bodhisattva on the left or right of the Buddha image. If the Buddha statue is placed high in the center, then the Bodhisattva should be placed in a low position in front of the Buddha statue.
