Description
‘Here is courage, mankind’s finest possession, here is the noblest prize that a young man can endeavor to win. Because we are Spartans!’
Leonidas, Spartan military king, whose stand against the invading Persian army at the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece is one of the most enduring historical moments of heroism. His name in Greek (ΛΕΩΝΙΔΑΣ) can be roughly translated as “Lion’s Son” or “Lion-like”. When the Persians called for King Leonidas and his troops to surrender their weapons, Leonidas famously replied “ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ” (come and get them). With a force of just 300 men, Leonidas resisted the entire Persian army, ensuring that reinforcements from surrounding cities could get into position to ultimately delay the invasion, saving many lives in the process.
This is a statue of King Leonidas of Sparta in his finest moment, standing firm against the enemy with no fear. A statue of Leonidas conveys an aura of perseverance even against overwhelming odds, and the importance of overcoming fear to achieve your ultimate goals and dreams.
