Description

Guan Yin is an East Asian spiritual figure of mercy, and a bodhisattva associated with compassion as venerated by Mahayana Buddhists. The name Guan Yin is short for Guan Shi Yin, which means “Perceiving the Sounds (or Cries) of the World”. She is also sometimes referred to as Guan Yin Bodhisattva. Some Buddhists believe that when one of their adherents departs from this world, they are placed by Guan Yin in the heart of a lotus, and then sent to the western pure land of Sukhāvatī.

It is generally accepted among East Asian adherents that Guan Yin originated as the Sanskrit Avalokiteśvara. Commonly known in English as the Mercy Goddess or Goddess of Mercy, Guan Yin is also revered by Taoists as an immortal. In Chinese folk religion there are mythical accounts about Guan Yin’s origins that are not associated with the Avalokiteśvara described in Buddhist sutras.

In Feng Shui, Guan Yin in used in many ways to summon good luck and fortune, as well as bring a sense of protection to the beholder’s home.

  • Place the Goddess of Mercy and Compassion at your praying altar, as she is a deity who can be prayed to. To overcome any obstacles you are facing, chant mantras at her figure at least once a day.
  • Exhibit the Goddess of Mercy and Compassion by the main entrance, facing outwards – doing so will counteract any negative chi entering the home. In addition to this, Guan Yin’s facade will serve to eliminate evil by repressing evil forces, giving your home the benefit of safe blessings.
  • To create luck with health and relationships for your household, place Guan Yin in prominent locales in your living room or main family room. She will calm family members, preventing arguments and tensions. However, refrain from cursing and crudeness around her presence; it is important to treat her with respect.
  • The Goddess of Mercy and Compassion is greatly revered; do not place her in the toilet, the kitchen, or at an elevation of less than 3 feet
