Description

In Greek mythology the Titan Atlas was responsible for bearing the weight of the heavens on his shoulders. Atlas was believed by ancient Greece to be the Father of many stars that gave his name to a huge mountain range in northern Africa, the great Atlantic Ocean and any large collection of maps. In antiquity, he was credited with inventing the first celestial sphere. Atlas was said to have been skilled in philosophy, mathematics, and astronomy. In some texts, he is even credited with the invention of astronomy itself.

Atlas was the son of the Titans Iapetus and Clymene (or Themis) and the brother of Epimetheus, Menoetius and Prometheus. The statue of Atlas symbolises carrying a great responsibility. The globe that he carries is marked by the 12 signs of the Zodiac, the Sun and the Moon, representing the heavens above. The globe of this sculpture can be opened to store your valuables, combining both form and function!
